Stanford Food & Farm Summer Camp 2018

Presented by Stanford School of Medicine

Each year Full Circle Farm partners with the Stanford School of Medicine to run five fun-filled weeks of cooking, gardening and science activities on the farm. This exciting project was featured in Micheal Pollan’s documentary, In Defense of Food. Watch our three minute segment here

Together we aim to create a learning community among the farm, Stanford University and our camp families. For example, on the last day of each week of camp we invite families to join us for a delicious farm cooked Pizza Party. The dough, cheese, and all the toppings are made by the campers and many of the ingredients are grown from the farm! This party is an opportunity for campers to share with families all they have experienced during camp.

We love cooking with kids and exploring new types of foods with them, but this is not all that we do at camp! Each day of camp features a specific theme which we explore in depth through scientific inquiry, art, songs, gardening, storytelling, and games. Last year’s themes included the life of seeds, cooking with spices, alternative mechanisms for cooking food (such as solar ovens), and cooking from around the world. This year we will add to those themes with soil biology, discovering wilderness on the farm (such as birding), and components of sustainable design.

Whether your child likes cooking, taking care of the farm’s chickens, gardening, conducting science experiments, or just having time to play outside, we know they will love our camp and that we will be thrilled to have them here!

Chirping Chickadees | 5 – 7 year olds

Campers explore our natural world through science and food.
Come learn how dough rises while making your own fresh-picked veggie pizzas, how our chickens help our orchard grow, and discover how a seed grows into the food we eat.

*We provide a garden snack, but ask that campers bring their own bagged-lunch. Each camp session runs from Monday to Friday. We have three types of camps based on the following age groups: 5 to 7 year olds, 8 to 10 year olds, and 11 to 14 year olds.

Session 1 – June 25th to 29th, 9am to 1pm ($245)

Learn about growing, harvesting, and cooking recipes from around the world, while learning about the science, technology, and traditions behind food.

Free Flying Falcons | 11 – 14 year olds

Campers investigate the science of food systems from soil nutrients and genetically modified foods to learning how different cooking techniques alters the taste of food.
In addition to learning how to grow food, and cook deliciously, we explore the microbiology related to: soil science, and composting. Free Flying Falcons build a simple microscope that works with a smartphone camera to explore the small life forms that live on the farm. Campers will also contribute to the construction of a compost tea brewer that will be used in the seeding greenhouse in the Full Circle Farm education garden.
